An electronic communication and control system has been developed as a prototype of advanced means of automatically modifying the switching of traffic lights to give priority to emergency vehicles. Unlike those prior systems that depend on detection of sounds and/or lights emitted by emergency vehicles, this system uses a wireless sensor network using zigbee which can be retrofitted into any pre-existing traffic-light control system.
This system comprises several subsystems including a transponder and interface circuitry on each emergency vehicle, a monitoring and control unit at each intersection equipped with traffic lights, and a vehicle sensor node fixed on each road towards the intersection that bridges the vehicle transponder unit and the traffic light control unit. A wireless zigbee network is formed between these three nodes.
The vehicle transponder always transmits a unique code while it is on the roads. The roadside vehicle sensor node constantly monitors for the unique code from the emergency vehicle and it sends the information over zigbee to the traffic control unit which blocks the intersection traffic except for the road it detected and once the emergency vehicles have passed through the intersection, the traffic control unit waits for an acknowledge message from the vehicle unit which is activated if the vehicle driver presses acknowledge key. Then the normal traffic is restored.
