CAVI: Red light violator warning (V2V/V2I)

Description:

This waring alerts drivers that another cooperative vehicle is likely to run a red light across their path at the intersection ahead.

Aerial view

Two cars are approaching an intersection – a white car is approaching a green light, and a green car is approaching a red light. The 2 cars are sending and receiving warning messages with the traffic lights – all of which are connected via cooperative intelligent transport systems, or C-ITS, technologies.

The white car receives a warning message from the traffic lights that another cooperative vehicle is likely to run the red light across their path at the intersection. The white car then brakes suddenly to avoid a crash with the green car which runs the red light and travels through the intersection. The white car then continues on its way with the green light.

In-car view

A car is travelling along a road, with a set of traffic lights visible ahead. The traffic light is showing a green light for this driver. The driver receives a warning message via an in-vehicle display tablet that another cooperative vehicle is likely to run a red light at this intersection and crash into them. This warning message is depicted by an image of two cars intersecting and an exclamation mark.

The vehicle then brakes suddenly, and slows to a stop as seen by the reduction in speed on the car speedometer. As the vehicle stops, a green car enters the view of the driver from the left hand side and crosses in front of the car heading right. This implies that if the vehicle had not come to a sudden stop, the car would have entered the intersection and been involved in a crash with the approaching green car. Once the intersection is clear of traffic, the car continues on its way with the green light.
