Circuit Girl Jeri Ellsworth Makes a 79 GHz Ham Radio Contact at Our Maker Faire Display

NEWS FLASH! Jeri is now an Amateur Extra class ham radio licensee. She passed all three ham radio exams in one session at the Pacificon ham radio convention (San Ramon, CA Marriott) in October 2016. Her callsign is AI6TK.

I’d like to think she caught the ham radio bug from visiting our Maker Faire booth called “Not Your Grandpa’s Ham Radio”

Informational Note:
Jeri Ellsworth is not an FCC-licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operator. However, because the FCC is very aware of the educational aspects of ham radio, it is perfectly legal for un-licensed people to operate a ham radio station – but only when under supervision of another licensed ham operator. (FCC Rules regarding Control Operators – FCC 97.103 and Third Party Traffic – FCC 97.115)

All personnel presenting at Maker #7660 are licensed hams. Basically, a licensed ham operator must be present to supervise and “control” proper equipment operation – both technically and to comply with FCC rules – when un-licensed guests operate a ham radio station.

This is one of the main reasons ham radio can be used as an excellent educational tool.

Jeri Ellsworth, carrying her K-Tar (also called the 8-bit Bass), stops by Maker #7660: Not Your Grandpa’s Ham Radio! display.

We got Jeri to make a demonstration contact on 79 GHz, using Tony’s homemade 79 GHz transverter system.
