Complete Streets is a program by the American Planning Association in conjunction with The National Policy and Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity (NPLAN)
Funding for the project was provided by the Federal Highway Administration, the National Association of Realtors, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, the Ruth Mott Foundation, and NPLAN.
What you will here is a discussion on Complete Streets with Barbara McCann, Executive Director of The National Complete Streets Coalition, Sarah Zimmerman, Senior Staff Attorney for The National Policy and Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity (NPLAN), and hosted by APA’s Research Associate, David Morley.
Why an attorney? As you will hear in the audio, there has to be some teeth to “bite” the ties that bind a child to it’s parent, because obesity will now be considered by many to be a crime, or in the case of a parent, child neglect! The attorney says, “they have to have a legal tool, legally sound, a strong statement, through resolutions or ordinances or laws. Their plan includes the legal language needed.”
Elements of Complete Streets include: sidewalks; raised crosswalks; median crossing islands; push buttons reachable by people in wheelchairs, curb cuts; curb extensions. Traffic calming including a road diet, center medians, elimination of free-flow right-turn lanes, angled face-out parking, street trees, planter strips and ground cover.
Bicycle accommodations, such as protected or dedicated bicycle lanes, neighborhood greenways, wide paved shoulders, and bicycle parking.
Public transit accommodations, such as Bus Rapid Transit, bus pullouts, transit signal priority, bus shelters, and dedicated bus lanes.
