Vienna, July 2011: While dozens of European cities accelerate their tramway networks by tram-controlled traffic lights and car traffic restrictions, Vienna is different. Since years the Kaiserstraße is a bottleneck for the tramway line 5, because it is also used by car drivers who want to bypass a main street nearby.
The trains even have to wait to pull into every station, because there the cars wait on the tracks until the lights turn green. Since yesterday the situation is even worse, since this route is now also used to replace a part of Vienna’s subway line 6, that had to be closed between Westbahnhof and Alser Straße until the end of August for renovation.
