The DVSA (the people who conduct the driving tests) recommend private practice to practice the things you are learning in your driving lessons. But first you need to make sure you are legal so you need to get some insurance.

to find an insurance company that can cover you from a week to 6 months. This insurance will not effect the car owners policy. You don’t need to own the car you are practicing in but it does need to have it’s own insurance. The car to be insured does not need to be owned by the person sitting next to you. So you can mix and match a good car with the right person to accompany you.
