12. Solar Energy
NASA’s need for new energy technologies for spacecraft led to massive leaps in the development in earth-based products, particularly with solar power. Light is one thing that’s in abundance when out in space, so it’s a natural energy source of interest.
Homes across the world are now being fitted with high performance crystal silicon solar power cells to give them an alternative to fossil fuels – all of which are based on work done by NASA and a coalition of 28 companies that became part of the Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology Alliance.
In their goal of building remote piloted craft that would fly at high altitudes for long periods of time, they needed lightweight solar panels to make the whole thing possible. This led to SunPower Corporation creating the most advanced silicon based cells ever developed for commercial use.
11. Anti-Icing Systems on Planes
Planes fly at such high altitudes that the formation of ice on their wings can cause serious problems and companies devote huge amounts of time and resources to help combat the problem. NASA, of course, had to deal with far lower temperatures when sending vehicles into space, so they developed their own technologies that are now used on commercial aircraft. Between their own research and grants they provided to other companies, they built a thermoelectric de-icing system called Thermawing. This provides pilots of single engine aircraft with the same wing-heating abilities that was traditionally only available to larger, more robust vehicles.
10.Highway Safety
Controlling traffic in the sky has lead to safety on our highways. Space vehicles exert intense energy and weight, especially when re-entering our planet’s atmosphere and during landing. So NASA had to improve the construction of the runways that were being used to take this into account.
One problem in particular was the way that runway tarmac reacts when it is wet, so researchers at Langley Research Center developed the technique of cutting grooves into the concrete to increase traction and reduce injuries.
This method was soon rolled out to airports and, subsequently, was used in the construction of new highways. It’s so effective that the grooves reduce skidding, decrease a vehicle’s stopping distance, and improve handling around corners. So effective and important is this discovery that further applications are always being found, such as inclusion in animal holding pens, on stairs, in parking lots, and anywhere else where slippery surfaces can be found.
9. Fire-Resistant Materials
Space flight requires the construction of vehicles that can withstand extreme heat, or else it will just burst into flame. Apollo’s heat shield was an evolutionary step in the field that dissipated energy by slightly burning, and using the charred coating to help block any further heat from getting through. It was such a success for those missions that NASA funded the company that developed it, Avco Corporation, to look at other areas where similar materials could be useful. This led to much more effective fire retardant paints and foams for aircraft, and steel coatings for use in high rise apartment buildings that inhibit the spread of fires for up to 4 hours- giving people inside a much better chance of escaping safely.
8. Portable Cordless Vacuums
Space exploration involves a number of unusual tasks, including vacuuming! This lead to the development of a device that’s seen in a large number of homes around the world- the portable cordless vacuum cleaner. Black & Decker first designed these for NASA for the Apollo space mission, a mission that had a particularly precise requirement. It was one of the last to send humans to the moon, and NASA wanted to collect core samples from beneath the surface. To do this they needed a lightweight, compact, energy efficient device to drill into the ground and suck up a sample. Black & Decker created a computer program that worked out the best optimization of the way the drills motor behaved to use as little power as possible. It was a complete success on the mission itself, and the program that they designed led to the future creation of one of the first portable vacuum cleaners, the Dustbuster. Ta da! Bet you were dying to know the backstory of the dust buster!
