Getting Started with the PCEHR: the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record

Dr Norman Swan facilitates a panel discussion where the panel share their personal experiences with the use and implementation of the PCEHR. They discuss the benefits to patients, healthcare practices and organisations with insight into the way in which the PCEHR can assist in improved patient care outcomes.

The program includes a role play scenario to demonstrate particular aspects of the PCEHR.

The PCEHR is an electronic summary of an individual’s important health information which is uploaded onto a secure site ensuring the information is available to nominated health practitioners whether the individual is in hospital, on holidays, visiting family or working away from home. The system will enable health services to be delivered more efficiently and effectively.

The Australian Government’s Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) system was launched on 1 July 2012 as a part of the Government’s national health reform agenda. Once registered, people seeking healthcare in Australia will have a personal eHealth record.

The PCEHR system will enable nominated healthcare professionals access to key patient information such as medications, test results, discharge summaries, allergies and immunisations. Rural and remote populations, travelling populations, working populations, patients with multiple medical complications, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders could significantly benefit from the PCEHR system.

A particular focus of the discussion will be on the Assisted Registration Tool as a means of increasing registration of consumers through the support and encouragement of the healthcare community, especially general practitioners and their practice staff or within the hospital situation.
