” It’s mainly important that the new light system mimics natural biorhythms, so that during the day light intensity is increased and in the night the room is very dark. Thanks to that the body makes certain substances that stimulate a good sleep. When the patient sleeps better that body has more rest and sleeping could be regarded as a holiday for the heart and vascular system. So at the moment that you can sleep better the body has more time to recover, the blood pressure is lower and also the heart beat is lower. So in that way patients’ recovery is much better.

” This system was quite important for me was as I am very bad sleeper. I was here in the hospital one week because the heart failure. I have to say I slept very well with this kind of light. It’s a very pleasant light”.

” As I am cardiologist I can talk about people with heart problems and I must say that this light system was beneficial for them and prolonged the time they slept. I can only predict that this light could be also good also for other sorts of patients. We generally know about co-relation of light and physiological health problems”.

18. SOUNDBITE(Dutch) Dr Luc Schlangen, Senior Scientist Philips Lighting:
“We think that with this solution we have find an easy application how to improve the healing environment. This clearly shows that light : healthy dark- light cycles is very important element of the patients recovery”.

A hospital in the Netherlands is installing new lights to mimic day and night to help cardiac patients recover more quickly.
Doctors say the lights help promote better sleep, which in turn helps the body to heal.
STORYLINE :
A heart patient changes the lighting is his hospital room from day to night and back again.
Patients at Maastricht University Medical Centre cardiac’s centre are trialling the new lighting solution, which the designers claim increases duration of sleep for hospital patients.
The University Medical Centre has carried out research in partnership with Phillips to investigate the effect of light on the sleep-wake rhythm of cardiac patients.
The research shows that after seven days in a patient room fitted with HealWell – a new lighting system developed by Phillips which mimics the natural day/night cycle outdoors – patients sleep on average 8% longer.
Dr. Petra Kuijpers, a cardiologist, Maastricht University Medical Centre says that restful sleep is crucial to a patient’s recovery.
Previous scientific studies have shown that high levels of light during the day helps patient recovery.
