Many New Yorkers may remember when some (or all, if you’re old enough) traffic lights in the five boroughs only used red and green indications. These signals were used exclusively in the city from the 1920s into the 50s, at which time they started being phased out. That process lasted until the late 80s, when they finally went extinct.
The signal you see here was set up for overhead mounting on a mast arm, which was much less common. Most were mounted directly on top of 8′ – 12′ posts on the corner or in the median.
