Hi, my name is Scarlett
and I am going to talk to you about the Arabic language.
Arabic is spoken as a native language by almost 300 million people
worldwide. It is the official language of 25 countries
in North Africa and the Middle East.
it’s one of the six UN offical languages
and the fifth most spoken language worldwide after Chinese, Spanish,
English and Hindi.
Arabic can be described as a diglossic language in which we find two varieties.
The first is the Modern Standard Arabic and is only ever used
in formal, written communications, broadcasts and statements.
On the other hand we have dialects which are used in everyday life
and are the mother tongue of all Arabs.
The dialects vary from region to region and have differing amounts of
mutual intelligibility.
When taken into consideration Arabic translation,
translation is nearly always in Modern Standard Arabic, the written form.
The only exception to this may be slogans or marketing material.
On the other hand, interpreting will almost always be in a dialect
so it’s really important to match a client
with the same dialect speaking interpreter.
An exception to this might be formal statements
or conference interpreting, which might use Modern Standard Arabic.
