It is only legal to drive through a yellow light if you are unable to stop safely when the light changes.
When approaching traffic lights, be prepared to stop in case the light changes, but check your mirror for vehicles travelling close behind.
If the light changes to yellow after you’ve moved into an intersection waiting to turn right, you are allowed to drive through the yellow light to clear the intersection.
Simple misunderstandings of road rules can cause a lot of grief – from near misses and minor crashes to serious injury or worse. Road rules are developed for your safety so make sure you know and follow them at all times.
This video relates to the road rules in Queensland and is current as at June 2012. Please note, road rules in other states may differ.
