Decision Making Skills for Right Turns Traffic Lights. It is my opinion only. What I find as a driving instructor is that learners find the right turns at traffic most stressful and they learn through fear and chaos therefore confusing the Road Rules & correct safe procedures to follow. This regularly happens to most new drivers. It is one most important driving tasks a learner will be regularly attempting. It’s advisable to gain as much information and practice with a competent qualified Driving Instructor.
This is one of the topic that is mostly misunderstood by the learner driver. There are many hidden hazards the learner drivers needs to seriously be-aware off. Poor decision making skills can lead a learner into a crash. Especially in their P’s stage . Therefore they must gain and maximise as much experience in the early stages of learning . The skills can reduce them the risk of having accidents in the future.
The Safe Decision Making Skills are briefly discussed in the Learner Drivers Logbook found under section 14 page 30 RMS Sydney Logbooks. The learning goals:
Ability to make safe decision when crossing or joining traffic, lane changing or proceeding at a traffic lights.
The learner is to be exposed to Medium then progressed or up skilled to High Density peak hour traffic.
Safe left & Right turns decisions
Turns across other oncoming or approaching drivers.
Lane change decision in and out of Zip & End Mergers
Consistent safe checks for traffic, when moving off from a traffic light (Reds to Greens)
Selecting a safe gap, where other drivers are not forced to suddenly STOP, Slow down or forced to abrasively use the brakes to avoid the learner driver!
Ability to clear the path of an oncoming vehicle. With lots of time to spare. (At least 3 seconds) be clear of the intersection for 3 seconds before other drivers arrive -therefore 5-6 second safe gap is preferred . This all depends on speed zones & traffic conditions. !
Ability to interrupt the simple and complex Traffic rules for all controlled and uncontrolled junctions & Merging types.
Making Sure to check both sides and all directions of traffic.
Ability to identify end & zip mergers and use the correct rules !
Ability to keep wheels straight BEFORE the right turns at traffic lights !
Ability to scan for Eclipsed/ left lanes / obstructed vehicles !
Ability to stay calm & use caution speed from the point of no- return on a complex right turn at a traffic. Even when light have changed colours .
Ability to scan the junction for safety of red light runners before moving out !
Identify other drivers intentions and scan for deceptive indicators from other drivers.
