Skip Counting by 4s Song

Skip Counting by 4s Song by https://www.guruparents.com.

This Skip Counting by 4s Song gives children an introduction to skip counting and to their 4 times tables. Skip counting helps kids come to grips with the concept of multiplication and kickstarts the process of memorization of, in this case, their 4 times tables.

This counting video is suitable for children of all ages but is especially aimed at children in in first grade through fourth grade. The beat starts slowly as we count by 4 to 40 and it then gets faster and faster. This is done to increase children’s number familiarity and help them develop an instant recall of the numbers involved in skip counting by four.

Most children have mastered their two, three, five and ten times tables before moving onto the number 4. If your child is struggling or not enjoying this part of their mathematical education remind them that just by knowing those other tables, they already know how to multiply 4 by 2, 3, 5 and 10 — they are almost halfway there before they even start!
The images presented change with each verse of the song:

- The first time we count by 4 to 40, each numeral comes on screen as it is said.
- Next, the written words for each number appear, ie four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty-four, twenty-eight, thirty-two, thirty-six, forty. Some children struggle with numbers as words so the sooner they become familiar with the words and their spelling, the better — especially given that many mathematical problems are presented as number sentences. It is a good idea to note to your child that ‘forty’ is spelled without a ‘u’!
- Objects appear (apples) four by four.
- Dots appear, four by four.
- The numerals appear, but rather than each number disappearing, they remain on screen and each new number appears in sequence.
- For the final verse, the music reverts to its original slower speed and the numerals are displayed as in the first verse.

Parental involvement is really important when it comes to learning new numerical skills. Say the times table along with your child while listening to the song — or even sing it with them. Laugh and have fun and then test each other with random four times table questions.

We also hope you and your child have fun trying to keep up with the music as it gets faster and faster!
