Salt Lake City Police Department’s Fusion Bike Unit hosted a bike school today for prospective officers seeking the coveted post.
The Fusion Bike Unit has four squads. Their responsibilities include:
• Urban patrol areas, including Main Street, the City and County building, Pioneer Park, the Gateway Mall, the Homeless Shelter, Sugar House business district, to mountainous terrain of the city’s foothills.
• Engaging downtown businesses to address concerns about criminal activity in the area.
• Assisting homeless service providers by educating homeless individuals in the unit’s patrol zone about housing and other services.
• Intelligence-led policing driven by the needs of the Department and City.
The Squads are not call responsive, which means rather than being tied to the police radio, they deal with public safety issues discovered in the course of their daily rounds. Known as “on-view” activity, this strategy is designed to reduce calls for service in the downtown area.
