The Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 was at first a private venture, started in 1966 by business engineer, Erich Waxenberger. His idea was to use the effective 6.3 litre V-8, M100 motor from the 600 Pullman limo, into the W109 S-Class 300SEL in place of its six-cylinder engine. The task was authorized by Mercedes-Benz management and was introduced at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show. In the four-year production run, 6,526 SEL 6.3 s were sold, more than two times the variety of 600s. It was priced at $16,275 with a/c, power steering, radio, and automatic transmission as basic equipment. McQueen’s is the European spec 6.3, which has a little greater compression.
McQueen and ferocious speed are synonymous. As the ultimate masculine hero of US film, he is recognized global likewise as a super-discerning judge of macho machinery. His stable of vehicles was sensational, never ever ordinary, always the most coveted of the time. This powerful Autobahn racer, with its massive 6.3 liter V-8 making it the world’s fastest sedan in 1972, fit perfectly in his collection. Because his touch turned all his automobiles into pure automobile gold, this one, too, will provide the you unrivaled bragging rights at any car show … and she is a fantastic automobile to drive.
AMG, Aufrecht Melcher Grossapach, was established by 2 ex-Mercedes-Benz engineers whose first race vehicle was a 300SEL that they tired out to 6.8 liters. Known as “The Red Pig” due to its crimson livery, it was without a doubt the biggest car on the grid, doubling the displacement of any competitor. Its run was brief due to excessive tire wear, but it did finish 2nd total at the 1971 24 Hours of Spa.
Produced from 1968 to 1972, the 6.3 combined solid, Teutonic high-end with efficiency that was astounding for a big vehicle and made it the fastest sedan on the planet. Its 0 to 60 time of 6.2 seconds astonished any traffic light competitors, and with its amazing cornering grip, due to its self-leveling suspension, made it practically unequaled in any duel. This vehicle was provided to the United States in 1972 and was titled to Solar Productions, Steve McQueen’s film business in Hollywood, on Beverly Boulevard. It is well recorded that McQueen drove this car until his death in 1980. Steve McQueen had a really strong affinity for quick cars and bikes, and later in life, airplanes. His great skills as a motorist motivated him to choose street-legal versions of race automobiles of the era as day-to-day transportation. Maybe McQueen’s interest in the 300SEL stemmed from AMG’s nascent development, the special variation of the 6.3 to compete in roadway racing events, and its success at the 24 Hours of Spa. Regardless, the documented ownership by McQueen and the SEL 6.3 being the foundation for AMG make this an extremely collectible motorcar.
When, “Owned by Steve McQueen”, is attached to any item, whether a car, motorcycle, gun, or a pair of sunglasses, the rate guides and other comparative tools are left far listed below. For example, a couple of years ago Bonham’s sold a pair of Persol sunglasses that McQueen may or may not have used in the movie “The Thomas Crown Affair.” These glasses cost $70,000, the McQueen connection raising their rate to multiples of their normal value. The very same halo result surrounds this 300SEL 6.3. It is well documented that it was signed up to his production business, Solar Productions; other documentation securely puts the car in his possession from shipment in 1972 up until his death in 1980. And his kid, Chad, remembers the day the vehicle was delivered to their house.
A 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 was offered by Gooding for $148,000 at their Amelia Island auction held in March of this year. The larger, more luxurious 300 SEL is a step above that, and contributed to that, the 6.3 with the larger, all-aluminum motor, is a much more preferable and important Mercedes. The recorded McQueen ownership positions the value of this car at a level far beyond that.
