Watch in high quality (480p). In this video, it shows the first, strong cold front of the season hit the Bay Area, including San Jose, CA on Wednesday, November 28, 2012.
First, it shows a few photos from the incoming clouds and whatnot on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 with the weather forecast in the background. It was also our last clear evening before the first, strong cold front approached California by the early morning hours the following day…
Coming Wednesday morning of November 28, 2012, showery and breezy conditions was felt as the front finally makes “landfall” in the state/Bay Area. A few photos on satellite, courtesy of NASA, shows the cold front already pushing its way inland into California during the morning hours. Southerly winds increased quite a bit during the frontal passage with sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts possibly reaching or even exceeding 40 mph, especially on the hilly/higher terrain as the morning progressed. The winds were pretty gusty up where our church, The Point Church was! I also went down Capitol Expressway after observing the winds. The rains was coming down at times, windswept style!
Coming around almost 9:40 a.m. or so, the skies lit up a bit and was able to even see the morning sunlight. However at that same time, I spotted a funnel cloud! It was a good thing the traffic light was red so I had a bit of time to observe. At first I thought it was a contrail but I looked closely and noticed how it was somehow maintaining a narrow/skinny funnel shape. I even saw a small portion of the funnel cloud wherein there was like clearing around the funnel. I was certain that it was indeed a funnel cloud!
The gusty winds continued into the late morning hours. I even saw a large canopy has blown to the side of the street out of someone’s yard! By around the 10 o’clock hour, the winds were at their max…sustained 20-30 mph with winds probably exceeding 40 mph in spots, even where I was at! Trees are being battered by the gusty winds, especially the palms. It almost looked like a tropical storm going through the area at 11:30 in the video! It was 10:44 a.m. around that time.
Coming past noon time and into the early afternoon hours, the cold front is finally starting to depart our area. The winds have died down and the rains have lit a bit. However, brief heavy pockets of rain was still experienced alongside behind the cold front. I was at school at EVC during the time of the isolated heavy downpours, shown in video, parked around the parking lots.
This was just the beginning of what’s to come. This series of strong storm systems would continue to impact the entire San Francisco Bay Area with heavy rain and gusty winds well into the weekend…into December…
Total approximated accumulated rainfall from this cold front/storm #1: 0.16 inches.
