TOP 5 HEALTHY FOOD SHOP TIPS | FOOD SHOPPING ADVICE

What are my top tips for doing a healthy food shop?

Your food environment is so important in regards to your health and fitness journey. By having the right foods available to you (and not having the wrong ones!) you are much more likely to be able to stick to a plan and achieve your goals.

Food shopping can be a bit of a minefield so I wanted to share with you my top food shopping advice in the hope that it helps you next time you go to your local supermarket or grocery store.

Make sure you don’t go shopping whilst hungry. You are much more likely to buy things which you are craving and that you do not need.

2) Make a plan of the meals which you want to have for the week and then write a list of all the ingredients which you will need. Don’t buy anything which isn’t on your list! Don’t be tempted by the offers in store.

3) Try and stick to the perimeter of the shop. It is round the outside of the shop which you will find the majority of foods which you will need, ie the fresh produce, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. Only go into the aisles as and when needed to as to not be distracted by food which you do not need to buy!

4) Make sure you are stocked up on store cupboard and freezer essentials. I always like to have some cans and tins of things which I can make a meal out of just in case I run out of fresh food. Things like beans, lentils, chopped tomatoes are all great and everybody should have some in stock! There is nothing wrong with frozen fruit, vegetables and meat or fish. Frozen fruit can in fact work out quite a but cheaper than the fresh stuff plus it wont go off if you don’t eat it within a few days. 5) Learn how to read nutritional labels and look at the pack of packaging. It can be quite shocking sometimes to see the difference in calories and macronutrient breakdown on what appears on the surface to be the same product. Take a few moments to look at the back and see what you are actually buying. It is also worth noting whether the packet uses the traffic light system and has green, orange or red flags! https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/food-labelling.aspx

I hope you enjoyed this video and are able to use some of the food shopping advice which I have shared. If there is anything which I haven’t mentioned or thought of then please let me know!
