This poem comes froma a Punjabi song book “Bachiyan Day Geet” (songs for children), written by Bibi Gurdev Kaur OBE. She found the teaching methods for Punjabi very old as pur teaching methods have not changed with the changing times. In the west the children generally go to the Gurdwaras to learn Punjabi in an evening class or Sunday classes but the teachers are still teaching with “Gadda Yug” (Cart Age) methods while our children are born and bred in the Computer Age and their brains are very sharp. So most children get bored with old methods of writing on the blackboard and copying letters and leave the classes without learning a lot. Moreover the teachers are not properly trained for teaching Punjabi in a modern way. Bibi Gurdev Kaur, while teaching in British Primary Schools realised that English was taught in very interesting way to the young children. She said, if English and other European languages can be taught through singing songs with the children, then why not teach Punjabi through the same methods. She started creating resources that will make teaching of Punjabi interesting. Her first song book “Asian Nursery Songs” was published in 1993 and since then there have been many others. These books have been very popular for teaching Punjabi in schools and Bibiji also took workshops to show the teachers how to change their methods and teach Punjabi in an interactive and interesting manner.
