Turning left at complex intersection is takes driving to its highest level of multi-tasking. Watch the video.
Complex intersections where left turns are permitted are equipped with turning lanes, stop lines, crosswalk lines, advanced green traffic lights, and often right-hand turning lane. These traffic management road components work to move vehicles & road users smoothly through the intersection and reduce conflict points.
As a new driver, you must know the function of these components and how to navigate these intersections. First, get into the turning lane as soon as it begins- that part cannot be stressed enough.
Check your mirrors, signal, and shoulder check approximately 1/2 block before the turn. Move into the turning lane immediately. And if there is a red light, stop before the stop line. As you’re waiting, watch both the pedestrian crosswalk on your left, and the cross-road traffic light. You have 2 seconds from the time the cross-road traffic light goes red to the time your traffic light goes green.
If you have the advanced green turning light, you can proceed when the light turns green. If you have to wait at the intersection for traffic to clear and you are the first person in line, wait with the front tires of your vehicle on the front crosswalk line – that way you are committed to the intersection, but not in the intersection. This strategy will protect you in the event that something goes array.
If a gap in the traffic does not present itself, you will have to proceed on the amber light. Watch carefully for your light to go to yellow as 2 things must to happen: 1) you must check to ensure that the oncoming traffic has, in fact, stopped – in other words, a vehicle isn’t “ripping” through the intersection; 2) you must look in the path of travel and deftly clear the intersection.
