“I was feeding my cat on my terrace when I saw a flash in the sky, and an incredible bang and then I saw that it couldn’t be a thunderstorm and the next moment I saw the first part of the plane falling down from the sky – an orange glowing part of the plane. There was s a total of three sections which slowly fell down down to the ground. The last section that hit the ground exploded with a very blinding flash.”

“I am from Stuttgart. We were sitting on the balcony when I saw a bright orange light and then there was a bang and then three glowing sections of a plane fell down from the sky slowly. They fell and shortly after that we saw the blue lights of the rescue teams from Stuttgart and Seingen on the highway. We saw police and then we drove here.”
Q: Did the planes explode in the air or on the ground?
A: “I believe in the air because the clouds shone bright yellow and three sections of the a plane fell down from different directions.”

29. SOUNDBITE: (German) Siegfried Tann, County Official:
“Across the area of Ueberlingen we found sections of the wreckage, and bodies so far, scattered all over. The firefighters have put the fires, the police are on duty, we cannot say more at the moment . We have to expect more bodies and as soon as we have more light we will know more. We have asked for helicopters with heat seeking lights. Police and firefighters are leading the operation and we are providing support for the emergency teams in Ueberlingen. We have been told Moscow to Bahrain, but this may not be true as this would mean a triangular routing.. the other plane must have been a transport plane on its way to Brussels from Beragamo……..with three people on board………there will be hundreds of people on site when day breaks due to size of area……..the passenger plane was probably from Russia- we don’t know more at this stage…..there were some fires on the ground but so far they have all been put out and we don’t have have any more casualties on the ground.”

Burning wreckage is scattered over a 25 to 30 kilometres (about 20 miles) from the point where the plane went down over Ueberlingen, 220 kilometers (135 miles) south of Frankfurt.
At least one building was reported on fire, but there were no immediate reports of casualties on the ground.
Rescue workers have already recovered the bodies of two of the victims.
